Description:

Stephen James Ferris (American, 1835-1915), "The Young Lovers", oil on board, signed and dated "1893" lower left, sight 15 in. x 24 in., matted and framed. Note: Ferris was a painter and etcher. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art and with Samuel Waugh (1814-1885), before joining the staff of the Philadelphia School of Design where he was an instructor for over 25 years. Ferris was a member of the Boston Art Club and the Philadelphia Sketch Club. He exhibited widely, most notably at the Pennsylvania Academy, the Boston Art Club, and the National Academy of Design. His son and daughter were also artists.
