Description:

Ted Ellis (American/New Orleans, b. 1963), "High in that Cotton", oil on canvas board, signed lower right, signed and printed artist's biography en verso, 10 in. x 8 in., framed. Note: Growing up in the Lower Ninth Ward, a young Ted Ellis would frequent the French Quarter to observe and interact with the various local artists who populated the streets. “I spent a lot of weekends in the French Quarter bugging the artists. I was the kid with a thousand questions.” While art and art education was always his main passion, he opted for a more traditional education and studied chemistry in college. He spent several years as an environmental chemist before quitting his job in 1996 to dedicate his full attention to art. From then on his craft flourished, and he found a following. In 2009 he was commissioned to paint a portrait of President Barack Obama for the Black Chamber of Commerce and the National Newspaper Publishers Foundation Inaugural Gala in Washington, D.C. A self-described “Creative Historian,” Ellis uses his work to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of African-American history. His style is bold and colorful with impressionistic brushstrokes. In the lot presented here, a man is caught mid-motion in the fields picking cotton. The composition is close-cropped, exemplifying the captured energy of the vibrant subject-matter. Ref.: Kahn, K.
