Theodore "Fonville" Winans (American/Louisiana, 1911-1992), two vintage silver gelatin photographs of Louisiana Governor Richard W. Leche, including "Leche Holding an Embossed T-Shirt", vintage silver gelatin print, signed and dated "1938" lower right, "Fonville Winans Estate Collection", 1995 stamp en verso, 4 7/8 in. x 3 7/8 in., unframed; accompanied by "Leche Enjoying a Cocktail with Fonville Winans", unsigned, dated "1939" en verso, 14 in. x 11 in., framed Note: Richard W. Leche (1898-1965) was elected governor of Louisiana after the assassination of Huey P. Long in 1935 and held office from 1936-1939. Memorably quoted as saying "When I took the oath of office, I didn't take any vow of poverty", he and his cronies embezzled lavishly from funds intended to fulfill President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal programs. He was forced to resign in 1939 and later imprisoned. Fonville Winans, who photographed Baton Rouge's political leaders, chronicled Governor Leche throughout his tumultuous political career.
