Theodore "Fonville" Winans (American/Louisiana, 1911-1992), "Grand Isle Artist", 1931, silver gelatin photograph laid down on board, signed and dated lower left, 16 in. x 20 in., framed Note: Initially attracted to Grand Isle by Lyle Saxon's book Lafitte the Pirate, Fonville Winans created a striking series of photographs of the coastal community in the early 1930s. In "Grand Isle Artist", Winans moved away from his straight documentary style of photography to a pictorialist approach with a textured atmospheric quality in this image of an artist sketching the rustic fishingcamps.
