Theodore Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed to Rough Rider Recruit, one page, on Navy Department, Washington, letter head, dated April 27, 1898, to Kurtz Eppley, Esq., Hutton Park, West Orange, N.J., in full: "My dear Sir:/ I believe you would be just the type we would want for our work, but I can't be certain that I can get you. I suppose it would be impossible for you to come here and see me./Very truly yours / T. Roosevelt"; together with Theodore Roosevelt, The Rough Riders, Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1899.
Note: The appendix of The Rough Riders indicates Eppley as a Trooper in Troop D, under Captain R.B. Huston, page 247. A New York Times article dated June 17, 1898, notes that "Kurtz Eppley, a son of Francis M. Eppley, a New York lawyer...has gone to join Roosevelt's rough riders. Mr. Eppley has been a member of the Essex Troop of the New Jersey National Guard."
