Description:
Theora Hamblett (American/Mississippi, 1893-1977), "Dog in the Woods", oil on canvas board, signed and dated "'66" lower right, "Bryant Galleries, Jackson, Mississippi" stamp en verso, 16 in. x 20 in.
- Notes: Note: Theora Hamblett, a primarily self-taught artist, began painting at the age of 55 Many of her paintings are extremely personal, and are based on the painter's memories and scenes of pastoral Mississippi life that she recalls from her youth. These nostalgic scenes often portray the natural landscape with which Hamblett grew up, including her famed trees, whose tiny stylized leaves have become her signature technique. This painting from 1966 depicts a Mississippi landscape with bright, colorful leaves filling the two trees in the foreground, along with one barren tree in the background. The small dog in the scene is an interesting addition to the painting. Hamblett herself was known to say, "To me, a landscape needs some form of animal life to make it interesting." In this painting, as in many of her early works, animal life plays a vital role in portraying the nostalgia of her childhood on a farm in rural Mississippi.
