Description:

Theora Hamblett (American/Mississippi, 1893-1977), "A Game of Tennis", oil on canvas, signed and dated "'69" lower left, 16 1/8 in. x 19 1/8 in., framed.

  • Notes: Note: Theora Hamblett, a primarily self-taught artist, began painting at the age of 55 after many years spent teaching at various schools in Mississippi. Many of her paintings are extremely personal, and are based on the painter's memories and scenes of pastoral Mississippi life from her youth. These nostalgic scenes often portray the natural landscape with which Hamblett grew up, including her famed trees, whose tiny stylized leaves have become her signature technique. In her paintings, Hamblett also continually returned to images of children playing games. The artist wrote "I have so many memories of playing games under the trees when I was a young girl. When I became a teacher I still enjoyed watching children play, and often played with them." The painting featured here, a scene of two girls playing tennis under the trees, is an obvious reference to Hamblett's own childhood in Mississippi. An almost identical tennis painting is featured on page 66 of the book Theora Hamblett Paintings. References: Hamblett, Theora. Theora Hamblett Paintings.
