Thomas Cantwell Healy (American, 1820-1899, active Mississippi/Louisiana, 1843-1899), "Portrait of a Southern Lady", 1863, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, 14 in. x 12 1/4 in., framed Note: When the Civil War began, T.C. Healy remained in the South where he was an established portrait painter among the Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama planters. During the war years, he continued to earn portrait commissions and painted the marine painting of the Confederate blockade runner, "CSA Steamer Denhigh" in 1864. The "Portrait of a Southern Lady", painted in 1863, could either be a studyfor a larger portrait or a post humous portrait, painted shortly after the death of the sitter.
