Thomas H Willis (American, 1850-1925)., 'Sailing Ship at Sea', oil on canvas, monogrammed 'T.W.' lower right, 18 in x 12 in., with gold silk and paper sails with embroidered figures, in an antique frame E700-1000 Note: Thomas H Willis settled in New York City in 1870 and established himself as a marine painter Willis apparently worked for a silk embroidery thread maker and became well versed in the textile arts Willis advertised as the 'Inventor and sole maker of silk ware pictures' His silk pictures of boats became popular and were commissioned by sailors, sea captains and shipping companies As with 'Sailing Ship at Sea', he typically used silk or satin fabric supported by cardboard for the sails, textured hulls and silk threads for the rigging which was placed on a painted background.
