Description:

Thomas Hart Benton (American/Missouri, 1889-1975), "Huckster, New Orleans", c. 1928, pen and ink with pencil on paper, signed lower left, pencil-titled en verso, 7 in. x 8 3/4 in., framed Note: Thomas Hart Benton, a leader of the American Regional School, made his first trip around the country to capture daily American life in the mid-to-late 1920s, arriving in New Orleans from New York by train, then traveling north by towboat on the Mississippi River. Benton looked beyond his storied political familial roots to a career as an artist; he studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the Académie Julien in Paris, where he developed his style. His prominence began to take shape in the early 1920s, and his interest in the common man and his plight dominated his subject matter. The sensitive and vibrant drawing offered here is a testament to this theme in the artist’s career, as Benton captures in just a few skilled lines, the interaction between a street huckster and his customer. Mule-drawn carts were a common sight in New Orleans in the 19th and early 20th centuries, as mules played a vital role in transportation and commerce. Ref.: Sasser, Bill. "Thomas Hart Benton."
