An American Sterling Silver Yachting Trophy, Black, Starr, and Frost, New York, wc. 1874 to present; monumental cup and cover in the Georgian taste, engraved "SECOND SERIES CUP / 1915 / N.Y.Y.C. 50 FOOT CLASS / FIRST PRIZE / WON BY / BARBARA", height 19 1/2 in. Provenance: The Headley-Whitney Museum, Lexington, KY Note: The fifty footer Barbara was commissioned by noted sportsman Harry Payne Whitney in 1912 and named for his youngest daughter, Barbara, later Mrs. George Headley. The Barbara won numerous races in New York and Newport, including this 1915 race of the New York Yacht Club. This trophy is closely related in design to the New York Yacht Club's historic Resolute Cup, originally awarded to the Resolute for winning the Long Island Series in 1915.
