Description:

A Fine Set of Twelve Late Regency Carved Mahogany Dining Chairs, early 19th c., each with tablet crest rail, medial rail with hexagonal tablet centered by fans, molded seat rails with brass band, turned reeded legs. Provenance: Acquired Harvey & Co. Antiques, Chalk Farm Road, London, England, 1977 Note: The distinctive profile formed by the tablet crest rail, outswept stiles, and rear saber legs imitates the outline of the ancient Greek klismos chair. Such archeological prototypes were academically interpreted in the designs of Thomas Hope, who in 1807 published Household Furniture and Interior Decoration. While the chairs offered for sale do not copy a particular plate in Hope's publication, they reflect the archeological quality associated with his designs.
