Description:

Two Antique French Faïence Plates, c. 1790s, Nevers (Nièvre), both marked "A 8" in underglaze sepia, red and green décor, with Phrygian "Caps of Liberty" and tri-color Republican banners, diameter 9 in. Note: The factory at Nevers made a specialty of revolutionary-period patriotic decoration (W. Chaffers, Marks and Monograms, Los Angeles, 1946, pp. 145-200); a somewhat similar, though slightly earlier Nevers design is illustrated in Boone Collection, Los Angeles, 1998, p. 41, color pl. 11; but a series of very closely related Nevers plates is illustrated in Grand Livre de la Faïence Française, p. 133, fig. 158.
