Two Dogon Carved Wood Twin Figures, Mali, the first figure standing tall with arms raised and one head stacked atop the other; the second figure kneeling with one head carved behind the other, height 59 in. and 30 3/4 in. respectively, the first presented on a double stepped plinth.

  • Provenance: Provenance: Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Note: According to Dogon belief, genesis began with twins. Twins are consequently believed to posses special powers and are often the subject of Dogon art. Twins are forever connected through the act of their single birth. At varying times in life, one twin will carry the burden of the other, a metaphor which serves to instruct the entire extended family and village.
