An Important Virginia Secession Ordinance, An Ordinance to repeal the ratification of the Constitution of the United State of America, by the State of Virginia..., 1861, lithograph, broadside (35 1/2 in. x 27 3/4 in.), by Hoyer & Ludwig, Richmond, the text with calligraphic embellishments, imprint line beneath "An Ordinance" reading "written by William Flegenheimer, Prof. of Penmanship", under the resolution are 143 facsimile signatures incl.: John Tyler (former President), Jubal A. Early, John Q. Marr (the first Confederate casualty, killed on June 1, 1861) and others, mounted to heavy stock. Provenance: Lewis Edwin Harvie (1809-1887), thence to his son, Colonel Edwin J. Harvie (1835-1911) to his daughter, Jane Rutherfoord Harvie (1865-1930), thence by descent in the family. Note: The calligrapher, Flegenheimer, was employed by the Convention to engross the original parchment act, now conserved in the State Library of Virginia. Noted in the 1862 Acts of the General Assembly of the State of Virginia, pg. 38, is "To pay Messrs. Hoyer & Ludwig for engraving and printing two hundred copies of the ordinance of secession, three hundred and ninety dollars". There are only 4 copies of this lithograph known, one in U. of Virginia's Alderman Library.
