A Fine American Colonial Revival Pine and Mixed Woods Windsor Armchair, early 20th c., bearing label of Wallace Nutting (Massachusetts, 1861-1941), model #409, tall bow back with squared terminals in a flat small armrest, shaped elliptical seat, bulb-turned and tapering legs with a stretcher, original surface Note: The c. 1770 prototype for this chair is illustrated as #2643 in Volume Two of Wallace Nutting's seminal Furniture Treasury. The author describes the form as "beautifully turned, including the front spindle, well shaped bow; necking to small dimensions and enlarging like a mortise..." features echoed in the chair seen here. The extraordinarily high back on this chair relates to that on a "Spinster's chair" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art documented by Nutting as #2698.
