Monumental American Renaissance Carved and Burl Walnut Bookcase, mid-19th c., labeled "Moore, York, & Howell Nos. 261, 263, 265 S. Second St. Philadelphia, est 1833", carved crest with central cartouche, lobed finials, stepped beaded frieze, glazed doors, flaked by Corinthian columns, base with paneled doors, stepped plinth, h. 112 1/2 in., w. 95 1/2 in., d. 23 in Provenance: From Eberhardt's 2010 Walnut St., Philadelphia, oldest antiques shop in America, founded before 1865. Note: The Philadelphia firm Moore, York, and Howell, successors to Moore and Campion, exhibited at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial International Exhibition where they received an award for a Walnut Parlor Suit, Centre Table, and Game Table. Interestingly, a similarly carved and burled walnut parlor cabinet with an identical label sold in these rooms October 6, 2007 as lot 90. While the latter is more elaborately decorated, as one would expect with a smaller furniture form, both the bookcase and the parlor cabinet demonstrate the high style of furniture this firm produced for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition.
