Description:

A Rare Pair of Italian Walnut, Ebonized, Ivory and Exotic Woods Inlaid Bombé Encoignures, 18th c., each upper case with arched crest, base with shaped plinth and feet, overall inlay of hunt scenes, cupboard interiors with traces of original marbled paper, iron strap hinges and hardware, height 79 1/2 in., width 36 in., depth 24 in Note: The remarkable inlay on these cabinets relates closely to the 18th c. German cabinet shop of Johann Georg Wahl (1702-1773), who popularized hunting scenes such as those seen here southern Germany and northern Italy. The distinctive tapering tops and bombe lower cabinets seen here designed to have dramatic impact when placed in opposing corners of a room. The tradition of these rococo period cabinets endured for generations. A similar example is illustrated in Payne. 19th c. European Furniture. p. 429, fig. 1272.
