Walter Inglis Anderson (American, 1903-1965), "Cecropia Moths, 'The Heavenly Twins'", c. 1960, watercolor with traces of graphite on paper, estate stamped with initials "WIA" lower right, Albers Fine Art Gallery, Memphis, TN label en verso, 11 in. x 8 1/2 in., float-matted and framed. Note : Walter Anderson spent long stretches of time on Horn Island painting colorful watercolors of the flora and fauna. Despite enduring the sometimes harsh elements of nature, he created a large group of watercolors during the last fifteen or so years of his life. Anderson's best work from this period uses his technique of vivid colors set down separately, with the white ground of the paper used as part of the composition. The painting offered here depicts two cecropia moths. Unlike most of his work of the nature of Horn Island, this piece actually has a story behind the subject. Anderson found two cecropia moth cocoons, one o Belle Fontaine Beach near Ocean Springs and the other on Horn Island, which he placed in a large jar. They hatched the same day and were called ""the heavenly twins"". He created a series of watercolors of the two moths, one of which is illustrated in The Art of Walter Anderson (p.219). The work offered here depicts the ""twins"" in an active state with their wings upraised.
