Walter Inglis Anderson (American/Mississippi, 1903-1965), 'Cartoon for Mural at the United States Courthouse, Jackson, Mississippi', oil on wood panel affixed to masonite, unsigned, 21 in. x 36 in. E50000- 70000 Provenance: Robert McKnight, Director of Brooks Memorial Art Gallery of Memphis, to Brown Gallery, Jackson, Mississippi, to a Private Collector, Jackson, Mississippi. Note: In 1934, Walter Anderson received his first commission for a mural. Under the auspices of the Public Works of Art Project of the New Deal, Anderson painted a series of murals for the auditorium of the Ocean Springs Public School. After this initial success, Anderson sought further mural commissions from the Treasury Department's Section of Painting and Sculpture in the fall of 1935. Anderson submitted a series of cartoons and sketches for the federal courthouse in Jackson, Mississippi. This cartoon has the same design and content as the cartoon from the federal courthouse proposal that is currently in the collection of the Walter Anderson Museum of Art. Anderson's proposal was not well received. The design was criticized as being not 'suitable for a court room' specifically that the colors were inappropriate, and the subject needed to be 'more dignified.' Only the preliminary cartoon and sketches remain of Anderson's proposed murals.
