Description:

Walter Launt Palmer (American, 1854-1932), "View of the Lake with Dock and Row Boat", 1889, oil on canvas, monogrammed and dated "Aug. 31 1889" lower left, 13 1/2 in. x 10 in., framed. Note: As the son of a well-known sculptor, Walter Launt Palmer was exposed to the arts from a young age. Among his father’s circle of friends was Frederic Church (1826-1900), one of the leading American landscape painters of the day, who took the young Palmer as a pupil. Under Church’s tutelage, Palmer gained a keen understanding of the richness and beauty of nature and how to capture its splendor in oil and watercolor. A native of the Catskills area, Palmer would have been familiar with the breathtaking views of mountains, forests, and waterways that lured urban dwellers as an escape from New York City. In the work offered here, the tranquil colors reflect Palmer’s strengths, which an 1884 art critic best summarized as a “delicate feeling, independent study, and love of nature.” Palmer’s popularity among critics and arts patrons allowed him entry into many of the leading arts institutions, including the National Academy of Design, American Watercolor Society, and Salmagundi Club as well as inclusion in the public collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
