Wenonah Day Bell (American/Georgia, 1890-1981), "Pitching the Circus Tent", oil on board, unsigned, 20 in. x 26 in.; accompanied by a copy of the book Restless Bells, by Wenonah Day Bell, New York, Vantage, 1973, first edition hardcover. Note: After a thorough education from such schools as the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Hans Hoffman School of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany, and the Columbia Teachers College, Wenonah Bell went on to be both a professional painter and a teacher at Parson's School of Design in New York City. Bell exhibited throughout the Southeast, Philadelphia, Detroit, and New York City. The painting pictured here, Pitching the Circus Tent, exhibits her characteristic painting style, which, while realistic, incorporates elements of German Expressionism with its areas of bright colors and Bell's sinuous lines and expressionistic brushstrokes.
