Wenonah Day Bell (American/South Carolina/Georgia, 1889-1981), 'The Cotton Shed', oil on canvas, unsigned, Bob Jones University Collection, Greenville, S.C. label and Knoke Fine Arts label en verso artist plaque on frame, 14 in. x 12 in., in an antique gilt frame. Provenance: Estate of the artist, Bob Jones University Collection, Greenville, South Carolina, Knoke Fine Arts, Marietta, Georgia. Note: Born in Trenton, South Carolina, Wenonah Day Bell received her art training at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and Hans Hoffmann School of Fine Arts. Upon completing her studies in 1929, Bell returned to the Deep South and settled in Greenville, Georgia. During her lifetime, Bell exhibited nationally at the Art Institute of Chicago, Detroit Institute of Art and Society of Independent Artist. In the painting 'The Cotton Shed' Bell draws on her modernist training at the Hans Hoffman School of Fine Arts to create this powerful image of workers toiling in the shade of the shed as they hand sort the cotton.
