A Good American Aesthetic Sterling Silver Water Pitcher, Whiting Mfg. Co., New York, wc. 1866-1926, c. 1888, with naturalistic marine motifs in the Japanese taste, the design attributed to Charles Osborne, marked on the base with the Whiting trademark and design number "2800"; the waisted form having a spreading base ornamented with a chased repoussé mermaid rising out of the sea, her pearl decorated hair flowing into the scrolled waves, a cast model of a seahorse mounted on top of the handle, height 8 5/8 in., weight 47.80 troy ozs. Note: Charles Osborne (1848-1920), a well-known designer for Tiffany, also designed for Whiting, serving as chief designer during two different periods. The pearls, scrolling waves and sea creatures seen here are characteristic of Osborne's work in the 1880s. One of his most accomplished designs, executed for Whiting in 1883, was the Goelet Schooner Prize, which also featured pearling and seaweed motifs. Reference: Venable, Charles L.
