Will Henry Stevens (American/Louisiana, 1887-1949), "Wooded Landscape in the Great Smoky Mountains", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 22 in. x 18 in., framed. Provenance: A Circleville, Ohio, estate. Note: The pioneering American Modernist painter Will Henry Stevens moved to New Orleans in 1921 to teach at Newcomb College. Remaining in New Orleans until the year before his death, Stevens often summered in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee where he painted the pristine natural landscape of the Great Smoky Mountains. The vivid and colorful landscape offered here depicts a stand of pine trees reflected in the lake in the foreground. Stevens had a lifelong love for nature which he translated to canvas as exemplified by this painting.
