Description:

William Aiken Walker (American/South Carolina, 1838-1921), "Vegetable Vendor at Charleston Market", oil on academy board, signed lower right, 8 in. x 4 in., period frame. Note: To be included in John Fowler's forthcoming catalogue raisonné on William Aiken Walker

  • Notes: Note: The Charleston City Market, founded in 1807 and in its current building since 1841, was the home to meat, fish, and vegetable vendors throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although damage from a tornado in 1938 caused a decline in the use of the market, resurgence in vitality began after the site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The City Market building was partially based on the Temple of Athena Nike in Athens, Greece; the upper section was used for meetings and social functions, while the lower area housed the vendors. Historic photographs depict the arrangement of the vendor stalls – long rows along each side of the building supported table space to display goods, while grates on the front likely provided much-needed air flow. Walker perfectly depicts the iconic market and its vibrancy in this rare vendor scene. He portrays a woman sitting behind her wares, displayed along the grate-front stall. The colorful offerings include flowers, potatoes, turnips, sweet potatoes, radishes, carrots, and red peppers (a signature Walker addition). Growing up in Charleston, Walker would have known the market building well, and much like many of his genre scenes, this depiction of the daily activities of a vegetable vendor calls to mind a sense of nostalgia.
