Description:

William Aiken Walker (American, 1838-1921), "River Landscape with Fisherman in Skiff and Paddle Wheeler", oil on canvas, signed lower right, 6 in. x 8 in., period giltwood frame Note: This rare canvas relates closely in style and subject matter to Walker's work along the Ocklawaha River as seen in figures 78 and 103 of The Sunny South:The Life and Art of William Aiken Walker. At Walker's first arrival in St. Augustine, several artists had already made the trip south from New York rail, many opting to stay and set up studios to record the lush and varied Florida landscape. Steam powered vessels such as the one pictured here were common along Florida waterways. In this canvas Walker takes a step back from the agrarian roots of his cotton field portraits and cabin scenes choosing instead to frame the industrial steamship chugging its way upriver pass the skiff with its fishermen folding their sails after a long day. To be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne by John Fowler.
