Note : African-American painter and preacher William Arthur Cooper first began his art career as a means to illustrate his sermons. Born near Hillsborough, NC in 1895, Cooper's talents led him to several careers including law and insurance brokerage. His art career flourished in the 1930s beginning with his inclusion in an exhibition sponsored by the Harmon Foundation in New York. His work became more secular and he focused on the everyday lives of the people in his Charlotte congregation. In the mid 1930s he toured the state speaking at both black and white colleges and schools. It was during this time he published his first book A Portrayal of Negro Life. The book was illustrated by twenty-seven of his paintings. Cooper left North Carolina in 1940 and moved to St. Louis where he preached and wrote several more books."
