Description:

William "Bill" Dunlap (American/Mississippi, b. 1944), "Late Light - Umbrian Hill Town, I" and "Valley Senzo(?)- on going, II", 1986, diptych, oil on wood, each panel signed lower right and titled lower left, former dated lower right, overall 24 in. x 96 in., framed. Note: "Hypothetical Realism" is the tongue-in-cheek term that William Dunlap coined to describe his own art. His landscapes, often depicting a vast horizon of hills, trees, and buildings are meant to be representations of specific places, but it is not uncommon for certain landmarks and details to be out of place. In the painting offered here, Dunlap utilizes his characteristic diptych format to fully capture an expansive scene. While the foregrounds of Dunlap’s paintings are frequently punctuated by animals, this rare canvas features a lone figure facing away from the viewer to survey the Italian hill town (most likely Todi) below. The singularity of this out-of-place nude, which acts as a stand-in for the viewer, underscores the dream-like sequence of the painting as a whole and leaves the interpretation entirely in the beholder’s imagination.
