William Bradford (American, 1823-1892), "The Painter Entering the Unknown, Greenland", oil on canvas laid on board, unsigned, titled en verso and bearing label "Gift Philip Claflin...", 18 in. x 30 in. Provenance: An albumen photograph and glass plate negative of this painting are conserved by the New Bedford Whaling Museum. The photograph is included in a scrapbook compiled and inscribed ""Into the Unknown"" by the artist's daughter. A digital image of the negative is catalog number 2000.100.1893.20 at www.whalingmuseum.org. Note : Artist and explorer William Bradford often painted scenes from his travels. Journeying to Nova Scotia, Labrador, and Greenland in 1861, Bradford documented the land with both photographs and paintings in his book, The Arctic Region, displaying the photographs. Bradford also lectured on the region, using slides of his paintings. As the title suggests, this may be a painting commemorating Bradford's first experience in the uncharted territory of Greenland. The dramatic scene, juxtaposing looming mountains of ice and hazy clouds, is characteristic of Bradford's Romantic style."
