William Garl Brown, Jr. (American/Virginia, 1823-1894), "Portrait of a Gentleman", oil on canvas laid down on masonite, sight 35 in. x 28 in., giltwood frame. Provenance: Hill family of Eastern North Carolina and later Texas; Smith and Welder families of Texas. Note : Originally signed and dated en verso, the inscription has been covered up by the lining material. A photo of the original inscription and a letter from the conservator dated 1967 are affixed en verso."
