William H. Hoyt (American, 1815-1862), "Still Life with Fruit in Creamware and Glass Compotes", oil on canvas, initialed and dated "1858" lower right, 22 in. x 27 1/4 in., in a period carved, gessoed, and giltwood frame.
- Notes: Note: William H. Hoyt was an architect and decorator of coaches and carriages, employed by James Brady, coach-maker, whose daughter Hoyt married in 1841. In the years nearing his death, Hoyt began painting on canvas, primarily creating still-life scenes, such as the one pictured here, although one genre scene is also known from the exhibition catalogues of the National Academy of Design in 1859 and 1860.
