William Henry Buck (American/New Orleans, 1840-1888), 'Sunset on the Louisiana Bayou', oil on canvas, signed lower right, 16.5in. x 22 in. Provenance: Estate of William Edgar Brown, Sr. and Carrie Launa Lutcher Brown, Orange, Texas and descended through the family. Note: William Edgar Brown, Sr. (1859-1917) was a physician, lumberman and mayor of Orange, Texas. After graduating from Tulane University, Brown married Carrie Launa Lutcher (d. 1941), the daughter of one the richest lumberman in America and began to practice medicine in Orange, Texas. In the late 1880s, with the expansion of his in-laws lumber business, Brown gave up his medical practice and became a partner in Dibert, Stark and Brown Cypress Company in Donner, Louisiana. Due to his successful business, William and Carrie Brown traveled frequently between Texas and Louisiana. During visits to New Orleans, the Browns became acquainted with the Louisiana landscape painter William Henry Buck and acquired this painting.
