Description:

William Henry Buck (American/New Orleans, 1840-1888), "A View in the Caribbean with a Rocky Cliff, 'French' House, and Palm Trees", oil on board, unsigned, "French's Artist Board, N.Y." label en verso, 12 in. x 20 in.; together with two c. 1895 French language instruction books, both inscribed "Mina Buck". Provenance: Private estate collection, Birmingham, Alabama. Descended in the family of William Henry Buck. Note : The painting offered here is distinctly rare in the oeuvre of William Henry Buck. Depicting a view of a Caribbean island, it shows a rocky cliff which slopes dramatically to an idyllic beach with a French colonial house surrounded by a glade of palm trees. As is often found in Buck's work, boats containing several figures ply the waters. Whether the artist traveled to the Caribbean is not known. He was a successful merchant and cotton broker, so perhaps he did have occasion to make a visit and record what he saw."
