William Henry Buck (Norwegian/New Orleans, 1840-1888), "Loading with Ice, Bangor, Maine", oil on artist's board, signed lower right, titled pencil inscribed en verso, E.F. E8000-12000 Note: The Norwegian born William Henry Buck initially settled in Boston, where he began his studies in painting. As a recent immigrant, Buck spent his time traveling to various locations in New England. By the 1860's, Buck decided to move south to New Orleans to work in the cotton industry as a broker and merchant. Buck continued his art education by studying with leading artists in the city including Richard Clague, Andres Molinary and Achille Perelli. After twenty years in the cotton business, in 1880 Buck opened an art studio and devoted his time exclusively to painting. Buck received critical acclaim as an artist and exhibited with Goupil's in New York City in 1877 as well as exhibiting regularly in New Orleans at the W.E. Seebold, Wagener's and Lilienthal's galleries in New Orleans. Buck painted various scenes outside of New Orleans and the south. In 1883, the "Daily States" newspaper wrote upon visiting Buck's studio that there were "several fine canvases representing the Penobscot River, Maine and Canada." This painting, lot 804, depicts a large sailing ship waiting at the dock to load ice from an icehouse located on the rocky Maine shore. Reference: H.
