[WILLIAM MCKINLEY, 24TH PRESIDENT/PAUL CAPDEVIELLE, MAYOR OF NEW ORLEANS Typewritten letter to President McKinley from the Clerk of the New Orleans City Council welcoming the president and members of his cabinet to the city, dated May 1st, 1901. The City of New Orleansseal impressed to letter at lower left corner. With accompanying envelope addressed to President McKinley c/o Mayor Capdevielle. E200/300 Note: President McKinley was the first sitting President to visit New Orleans whilst in office. He addressed the citizens of New Orleans from the balcony of the Cabildo where he appeared with Mayor Capdevielle on the 2nd of May 1901. Four months latter McKinley was assassinated by the anarchist Leon Czolgosz.
