Lot 130
Description:
William Merritt Post (American, 1856-1935), "Landscape with River", oil on canvas, signed lower left, 24 in. x 28 in., framed.
- Notes: Note: Known for the landscape paintings created near his summer home in Connecticut, William Merritt Post primarily utilized a Tonalist palette with rich greens and browns, having been influenced by the Barbizon school and his mentor, Hugh Bolton Jones. However, the impact of the newer Impressionist school can also be seen in his works, which generally present a study of light effects and a brighter palette than traditional Barbizon-style works. Post is notorious for his love of painting reflections on streams and rivers, as is evidenced in the present lot, where a glimpse of the green tree's reflection can be seen on the glassy surface of the slowly moving brook.
