Description:

William S. Robinson (American/Mississippi, 1861-1945), "Sailboats, Biloxi, Mississippi", 1937, oil on board, signed lower right, titled, monogrammed, dated and inscribed en verso, 10 in. x 12 in., framed. Note: The American Impressionist painter William S. Robinson was an important member of the Old Lyme Art Colony in Lyme, CT in the early 20th century. Following the closure of the art colony in 1937, Robinson relocated to Biloxi, MS at the recommendation of his friend, noted New Orleans artist William Woodward. A true American Impressionist, Robinson applied his skills to depicting the environs of his new hometown and produced a notable body of work of scenes in and around Biloxi. In the 1930s, the waterfront of Biloxi was an active place, with shrimp boats and canneries along the back bay, and yacht clubs on the Gulf of Mexico. The work offered here depicts several sailboats docked at a pier against a vivid blue sky and Gulf waters.
