Lot 512
Description:
William Sidney Mount (American, 1807-1868), "The Storm", pencil on paper, initialed "W.S.M", dated "July 8.68", and titled lower center, 6 in. x 4 in., attractively matted and framed.
- Provenance: Provenance: Childs Gallery, Boston, 1979; from the artist to Mrs. William Jones Seabury, Long Island, New York; to her grandson Andrew Oliver, New York and Boston, 1978; thence to Belle Cheniere. Note: This drawing depicts a post-Civil War mother taking shelter under a tree for the duration of the impending storm, where she comforts her two children and their dog. The mother¹s spreading skirts suggest the stability of her mission, a point belied by her and her daughter¹s anxious expressions which are mirrored by that of the dog.
