William Tolliver (American/Louisiana, 1951-2000), "Three Field Workers", pastel on paper, signed lower right, sight 31 1/4 in. x 19 1/4 in., framed Provenance: Live Oak Gallery, Lafayette, LA. Note: William Tolliver was a self-taught artist born in Vicksburg, MS. The second oldest of fourteen children, the family was very poor; his mother worked in the cotton fields. Despite their economic disadvantages, his mother was able to nurture his talent. She borrowed art books from the library for him to study the great masters. Tolliver bought watercolor sets from the dime-store and learned to mix and blend colors. Continuing on a course of self-study, Tolliver became skilled in a variety of media. In 1981, he moved to Lafayette with his wife and family and began successfully exhibiting his work at the Live Oak Gallery. He soon began to paint in a new and unique style that has been termed "representational abstract expressionism". Tolliver believed that art was a means for documenting one's history.
