Description:

William Woodward (American/New Orleans, 1859-1939) "Mid-Morning at Corner of Dauphine and St. Louis Streets", 1912, Raffaelli oil crayon on board, signed and dated lower right, pencil-signed, titled, dated and inscribed "original sketch" en verso, 22 1/2 in. x 29 in., in a period frame.
PLEASE NOTE: Provenance: Estate of Nancy Shaw Michel, New Orleans; from the Estate of Virginia Shaw Putnam, 11 Rosa Park, New Orleans. Note: William Woodward documented the historic buildings of the Vieux Carré in the early 20th century. A pioneering advocate of historic preservation, his impressionist works uniquely record the ambience, architectural character and street life of this district. The work offered here shows a view down Dauphine Street with St. Louis Street intersecting it. The mid-morning light creates strong shadows on the street while various people go about their business. Rendered in a brilliant palette, this large composition is highly finished and has a vibrancy and energy not often found in works from this series.
