Description:

William Woodward (American/New Orleans, 1859-1939), "Drying Room, N.O. Art Pottery Co., 249 Baronne St.", 1888, charcoal drawing on paper, signed, titled and dated "Dec. 25th, 1888" lower left, 24 1/2 in. x 19 1/4 in., unframed. Provenance: Collection of Gretchen and Alonzo Lansford, New Orleans. Note: Opened in 1888 on Baronne Street, the New Orleans Art Pottery Company employed potters Joseph Meyer and George Ohr, and was run by William and Ellsworth Woodward, who taught the female students classes on drawing and decorating pottery. This broad view of the drying room depicts the location where the thrown pots would be stored in preparation for firing in the large kilns. The same room is depicted in an oil painting by William Woodward now located in the collection of the Biloxi Public Library. In that painting, Woodward focuses on the potter’s wheel in front of the windows and depicts George Ohr throwing a pot in the foreground with Joseph Meyer in the background. The intriguing composition of the drawing offered in this lot, gives us great insight into the inner workings of the New Orleans Art Pottery Company, a forerunner to Newcomb Art Pottery.
