Description:

William Woodward (American/New Orleans, 1859-1939), "Poydras Market, Baronne St., 1885", Raffaelli oil crayon on board, signed lower left, and signed, titled, dated "1929" and inscribed "from old sketch" and in pencil "For Eleanor W. Moseley, 1933" en verso, 10 in. x 14 in.

    Provenance:
  • Provenance: Collection of Eleanor W. Moseley, daughter of William Woodward, to a private collection.~ Note: An influential teacher, talented painter and ardent historic preservationist, William Woodward found inspiration in the historic buildings of New Orleans. Through his paintings, drawings and prints, Woodward documented his adopted city. With his dedication and interest in architecture, Woodward was able to capture the nuances and details of the historic buildings as well as the city's active street life. Woodward frequently turned to the bustling Poydras Market as a fascinating and captivating subject matter. Prior to quality refrigeration, it was common to shop at the local markets daily for fruits, vegetables, meats, and seafood. Woodward etched three prints of the Poydras Market, each with different views of its decorative façade and bell tower. "Poydras Market, Baronne St, 1885," completed in 1929, as well as three of his etchings, were based on sketches he completed in the 1880s. By the late twenties, Woodward was confined to a wheelchair, and would oftentimes rely on his earlier sketches to create new works. Sadly, sharing the same fate of many important structures, the Poydras Market did not survive the modernization of the city and was demolished. In these rooms, during the October 6, 2007 Louisiana Purchase Auction™ a similar painting (lot 547) of the Poydras Market achieved a record price.
