Description:
William Woodward (American/New Orleans, 1859-1939), "General Washington Oak, Audubon Park, New Orleans", oil on canvas affixed to board, initialed "W. W" and dated "N. O., Œ23" lower right, pencil-titled and remnant of "W. E. Seebold Art Dealer, New Orleans" label en verso, 9 3/4 in. x 14 in., in a period frame.
- Provenance: Provenance: Washington, D. C. estate. Note: Throughout his career, William Woodward found inspiration in the tropical Southern landscape. In early 1921, an operation on his spine left Woodward confined to a wheelchair, this in combination with his age forced him to retire from his professorship at Newcomb College of Tulane University. This newly found freedom from the rigors of academia resulted in an intensively creative period for the artist. Painted in 1923, this charming impressionistic work depicts the "General Washington Oak, Audubon Park" located in uptown New Orleans.
