Description:

Wilson Henry Irvine (American, 1869-1936), "Evening in the Brulatour Courtyard, New Orleans", c. 1927-28, oil on canvas, signed lower left, 24 in. x 27 in., framed. Note: Considered one of the masters of American Impressionist painting, Wilson Henry Irvine was active in art circles in Chicago in the late 19th c. In 1918, he established his permanent residence at the art colony in Old Lyme, CT. Irvine traveled extensively throughout Europe and the United States. He spent part of the winter of 1927-28 painting in New Orleans and informed a journalist the reason was that twenty-five years earlier he had a passion for reading George Washington Cable and never forgot. The reporter noted Irvine “had a mild word of praise for the renovated courts of the quarter, but kept his unstinted encomium for the old grey places where the walls were decaying.” Irvine painted a series of paintings of the courtyards of the Vieux Carré during this visit. The work offered here depicts the Brulatour Courtyard, at the time the home of the Arts & Crafts Club of New Orleans, and one of the best-known courtyards in the French Quarter. Here, the moonlight and its ethereal glow beautifully combine in an atmospheric scene. Ref.: The Item-Tribune New Orleans. Feb. 2, 1928, p. 12.
