Wood "Pops" Whitesell (American/Louisiana, 1872-1958), "Demonstrating Angle Shots", silver gelatin print, unsigned, c. 1940, with inscription en verso, 14 in. x 17 in., unframed. E500/700 Note: Born in Indiana, "Pops" Whitesell moved to New Orleans in 1921and lived in the French Quarter among the numerous artists and writers who made up the famed art colony of the time. Whitesell achieved national acclaim for photographs and was honored with a one-man show at the Smithsonian Institute in 1946. He was active in local and national photography clubs and was particularly known for his group portraits. This photograph shows Whitesell in his French Quarter studio demonstrating how to shoot a portrait of a young woman, but in reality he is showing how to shoot a group portrait.
