- Notes: Note: Dr. Chunzhong (Paul) Xu was born in Shanghai in 1938 He received his M.A. and Ph.D. from the Tokyo Art University and a B.A. and M.A. from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Xu is currently a professor of Art at the University of California, Los Angeles; a consultant for the Bowers Museum, Santa Ana; and President of Yan Huang Art Institute, Shanghai. Shortly after Hurricane Katrina, Xu was moved to paint a series of three works titled "America, Unite!" depicting events in New Orleans and along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, which he donated for the benefit of Hurricane Katrina Relief. The paintings offered here represent the last two of those three paintings. With his nationally acclaimed depiction of "The Heroic Death of Jin Xunhua," created in collaboration with artist Chen Yifei, the young Xu came to be considered one of the most popular propaganda artists of the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). Xu continues to create works depicting major events in world history. He recently completed a series of twelve oil paintings highlighting the role of Chinese-Americans in US history, including their involvement in the Civil War, in the building of railways, and, more recently, in the war in Iraq. Encouraged by the success of that series, Xu is now working on an oeuvre consisting of seventy paintings depicting "glorious moments in Chinese history." Xu was the first Chinese person to be awarded the American Red Cross Hero certificate by the US Congress for his series of three paintings covering the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City.
