A Baule Carved and Painted Wood Figure of a Seated Female, Blolo Bla, Côte d'Ivoire, seated upon a two-legged chair, raised on a stump-like stand, grasping an object in each hand, the muscular torso with a protruding belly and large pointed breasts supporting an elongated, columnar neck, the face with raised features and pronounced bulging eyes, the detailed coiffure divided into three plaits, height 34 in., presented on a stepped plinth.
- Provenance: Provenance: Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Note: Unlike many other African artists' professions which are inherited, the Baule sculptor's profession is the result of personal choice. Baule figures such as the one here are carved to represent a "spiritual" spouse. When well cared for, blolo bla (spirit wife) and blolo bian (spirit husband) may assist their human partners in all areas of life.
