  • Notes: Note: Canton Enamel is Chinese painted enamelware named for the principal place of its manufacture, Canton. The Canton Enamel process is one that begins with a metal object, usually copper, which is then covered with a background layer of enamel (often white), fired, and then painted much in the same way a porcelain object would be. Originally developed in Limoges, France, this highly sought-after enameling technique was introduced into China through French missionaries during the 18th century.
