Description:
Fei Danxu (Chinese, 1801-1850), a corresponding pair of paintings, "Two Sisters Floating in a Stream Beneath a Willow", ink and color on paper, signed and sealed upper right, and "Two Sisters Studying in an Outdoor Pavilion, Beneath a Paulownia", ink and color on paper, signed and sealed upper left, with an inscription on silk border, middle left, relating the story of how the two paintings were matched to create a "pair", each 36 3/4 in. x 7 1/2 in., framed and glazed.
- Notes: Note: The oval faces, slanting eyes, and tiny mouths of these slender and delicate beauties are characteristic of the female ideal as conceived by Fei Danxu, the famous Qing Dynasty figure painter. Fei was considered the inheritor of the tradition established by the Ming master Tang Yin (1470-1523).
